It’s party time on the Riverbank

Preparations are well underway for tomorrow’s free, family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations on the Torrens Riverbank.

Gates at Elder Park / Tarntanya Wama open to the public at 5:30 pm Tuesday, with the first fireworks display for families to be held at 9:00 pm followed by the major fireworks event at midnight.

A huge variety of food trucks, bars, roving performers and a stage featuring live music throughout the night will keep patrons entertained while waiting for the two fireworks shows.

Council has secured a talented line up of local musicians with The Cast once again taking the party through to midnight with plenty of crowd-pleasing, popular tunes.

Patron experience is the number one priority, with event capacity being up to 25,000 people at any point in time. However total patronage is expected to exceed this as people enter and leave during the night.

Other fireworks viewing areas are available along the River Torrens and on King William Road Bridge. Please note that for public safety there will be temporary closures of the Torrens Footbridge during the fireworks displays from 8:30 pm to 9:15 pm and 11:00 pm to 12:15 am.

Close to 400,000 people are expected to visit the city on New Year’s Eve with some 85,000 expected in the Riverbank precinct – including a huge crowd at Adelaide Oval as the Strikers take on Perth Scorchers.

Acting Lord Mayor Keiran Snape said it’s a joy for Council to host the Elder Park celebrations for the second year running since the forced cancellation during the pandemic.

“The traditional Elder Park celebrations have always been known as South Australia’s biggest New Year’s Eve party and I have a feeling this is going to be our biggest and best yet,” said the acting Lord Mayor.

“Our free New Year’s Eve celebrations are for everyone in the community to enjoy and we are expecting another huge crowd.

“Council staff have been working closely with SA Police and our fireworks and event partners to ensure a safe and fun night out for everyone, so I encourage the community to get along.”
